Building a Study Routine That Works

8 July 2026

The most effective study routines aren't the most intense ones - they're the ones a child can actually stick to, week after week, without burning out.

What good routines have in common

It's worth involving your child in building the plan rather than simply handing it to them - a routine they had a hand in designing is far more likely to stick than one that feels imposed. We would advise;

Keep it manageable

  1. 15 to 30 minutes per session
  2. Practise little and often
  3. Pick a time when your child concentrates best

Mix it up

  1. English and comprehension
  2. Maths
  3. Vocabulary
  4. Reading
  5. Timed questions

Take breaks

  1. Stop when they're tired
  2. Give them time to reset
  3. Don't force it

Keep it positive

  1. Praise effort
  2. Celebrate progress
  3. Don't compare

Keep life normal

  1. Make time for friends
  2. Keep up hobbies
  3. Have SEAG-free days

Stay flexible

  1. Adjust the routine when needed
  2. Keep practice regular
  3. Avoid cramming
  4. Calm and consistent beats hours of revision

The golden rule

Keep it short. Keep it positive. Keep it manageable.

Your child is preparing for a test, not training for the Olympics!
